Wayne explores Angola

Ever wondered what the fun part is about working at Jenman Safaris? The most fun part is that you get opportunities like this: Wayne, our valued Operations Manager abandoned the Jenman office for 2 weeks to become a driver for an Angola Safari!

Why did you go to Angola? We were running a tour on behalf of one of our agents and as there were 14 clients we used two of our specialised Land Cruisers. I went along as one of the driver-guides as I wanted to gain a better understanding of the road conditions, etc personally.

What areas did you visit in Angola? We travelled up through Ruacana into the Iona Park, and across to the coast just South of Namibe. We then travelled up the coast via Namibe to Baia das Pipas (Bay of Palms). From there we travelled inland to Lubango via the famed Leba Pass, and then south back into Namibia via Cahama.

What was your favourite place? My favourite place has to be the wild, woolly country we travelled through between Ruacana and Iona Park. Iona Park too has some incredibly stunning scenery. But what for me was the highlight of the safari was meeting some of the Himba and Moimba peoples in these areas.

What one thing should everyone be aware of when going to Angola? This trip is definitely for the adventurous. Angola is recovering from nearly three decades of civil war, and so the roads and infrastructure are virtually non-existent in the rural areas. To give you an idea, in the first few days between Ruacana and Iona we were averaging between 90 and 100 kilometres per day and that was driving around 8 - 9 hours per day. We were in low-range 4x4 most of the time, and actually for quite a few of the travellers on this trip this was one of the highlights of the safari.

If you would chat to us about Angola please email us on info@jenmansafaris.com or click here to look at our Angola and Namibia Safari!

To participate or not to... Now that is the question.

Participating on safari has always been a popular way for clients to get involved and to feel part of the Jenman family... Participating on safari isn't anything too hectic - if you are camping you will have to put up your tent, you will also have to help do the dishes occasionally and help preparing the food...

But, if you would prefer to sit back and relax after a "strenuous" day of game watching and picnic lunches then we have some great news for you. All our safaris that have a maximum of 12 people per tour will now be non-participation tours! If you would like to find out if your departure is a 12-person departure please contact us on info@jenmansafaris.com

South Africa - a 'Dream Destination'

Tourism Update reports that South Africa is the third most popular dream destination, according to the Virtuoso Travel Dreams survey, which is aimed at top luxury travellers. Wow. And South Africa also featured in fifth place as the most ideal family destination. Photographing the Big Five on an African safari was listed in sixth place among the top trips of a lifetime, beating experiences such as renting a private island and blasting off on a Virgin Galactic flight. Again, Wow.

Spike - a warthog with a difference!

We had an email from a friend in Zimbabwe the other day and we had to share! They had been away at a game park and on the first evening while sitting in front of the fire in the bar, in walked a fully grown warthog. He walked over to the bar and without a word the bar man handed him a pillow. He took the pillow, put it next to the fire and promptly lay down with his head on the pillow and went to sleep where, apparently, he spends the cold nights. Then in the morning, he's off into the bush again! My friend says that if the barman isn't there he will grab a pillow off one of the couches!

We think this story is absolutely lovely... some comfort in the wild - nothing wrong with that?! Gives a new meaning to a accommodated safari.

Meet Debby - our very own Picasso

Debby, our Sales and Marketing Representative, has been with us for just over 10 months and has already organised and planned a few very successful agent evenings! The next one is going to be this month - email debby@jenmansafaris.com if you would like to join our Madagascar workshop (remember it's going to be hosted in Cape Town only).

When Debby isn't at work, on the road or visitng agents she likes to relax outdoors by sailing and exploring new places. "If the water wasn't so cold in Cape Town I would scuba dive every weekend!"... Despite her love for the Ocean, she would love to go to East Africa. "I love East Africa and am desperate to see the Serengeti, as I have only seen the Mara and really enjoyed it! But, I also wouldn't say no if I had the opportunity of returning to Madagascar one day and show my two boys what an amazing place it is..." Decisions, decisions!

If you are wondering why we call Debby our very own Picasso it's because she has an amazing hidden talent... She loves to paint huge oils and acrylics with the most colourful themes depicting wildlife as well as the sea! "Who knows maybe one day I'll be famous..."... After seeing your work Debby, we think DEFINITELY!
