Nyanga Zimbabwe

ZIMBABWE SAFARIS AND NYANGA:
Nyanga is a huge and immense area consisting of a town, a few villages, the Nyanga National Park, the highest mountain (Mount Nyangani) as well as the highest waterfall in Zimbabwe (Mtarazi Falls). The Nyanga area was formally known as ‘Inyanga’ and was renamed to reflect the mountainous region, Nyanga is located in the Manicaland Province in the eastern highlands. The highest mountain, Mount Nyangani, is only 15 km away from the Nyanga village and measures a massive 2600 m! This area is one of the most popular mountains in Zimbabwe, perfect for walking trails and hiking. Nyanga is also a popular African destination because it boasts trout fishing, supreme golf courses, adventurous hiking, wildlife safaris and game drives.
The surrounding area of Nyanga contains an abundance of archaeological remains – pathways, structures, ruins and iron artefacts are found scattered amongst the open plains… Nyanga is characterised by rolling hills, ancient farms and vibrant communities. The farming community is one of the most diverse communities around with some of the farm settlements dating back 400 years. The farmers built the pit valleys, stone structures, the Ziwa ruins and the Nyahokwe ruins in the lowlands. Nyanga actually holds the most extensive and impressive stone structures and artefact collections in Africa. There are also rock paintings at Diana’s view and at Harleigh farm which is very close to the Nyanga area.
The Nyanga National Park is an immense wilderness area and one of the first places to be declared a national park in Zimbabwe. The Nyanga National Park includes a wide range of fun-filled activities that one can enjoy, such as; fishing, pony trails, guided walks and game drives. Mount Nyangi and the Mutarazi Falls both actually rest within the border of the Nyangi National Park and this park is in fact the oldest national park in Zimbabwe. Nyangi National Park was established as Rhodes Inyanga National Park as a bequest by Cecil Rhodes... The Park nearly doubled in size in the 1990’s when most of the Inyanga Block was purchased. This Zimbabwean National Park also includes an abundance of safari animals, such as; wildebeest, waterbuck, impala, eland, buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena and much more. It lies at an altitude of between 2000 and 2500 ; due to this it is a much cooler region than the surrounding lower Zimbabwean areas.
Nyanga is a great all year holiday destination. However, most parts of Nyanga should be tackled on a safari or an organised tour. If you are interested in kayaking and river rafting down some of the most magnificent rivers in Zimbabwe, then the best months to visit Nyanga are between August and December when the water levels are lower. If you are interested in general scenery and plant life then the best times to travel to Zimbabwe are between December and May.
