Spitzkoppe Namibia Safaris

NAMBIA SAFARIS AND SPITZKOPPE:

Spitzkoppe is a group of mountain peaks in Namibia located on a flat plain, which makes this mountain range, stand out dramatically. This Namibia mountain range is sometimes referred to as; Spitzkop, Spitskoppe, Groot Spitzkoppe or the ‘Granite Peaks of Namibia’. It is located between Usakos and Swakopmund and attracts rock climbers and geologist enthusiasts from all over the world. These granite peaks are dated back to over 700 million years and even though it’s not the tallest range of mountain peaks in Namibia, it is the most popular and well-known.

The highest part of Spitzkoppe is approximately 1784 m high! Next to this peak lays a smaller peak called the ‘little Spitzkoppe’, measuring 1584 m in height. It is believed that these peaks were formed by the collapse of a volcano millions of year’s ago. The rocks and peaks formed their unusual shapes by erosion and general weather conditions. The shapes of the peaks are extremely unusual creating some interesting photographic opportunities. Located between different peaks, lays an area named ‘Bushmen Paradise’, where one can see primitive Bushman paintings dating back thousands of years.

The highest peak of this area in Namibia is believed to be first climbed in 1904. However, this is a legendary tale which states that a soldier from the Royal Schutztruppe climbed to the peak and made a fire that could be seen all around. The interesting fact is that this mountain peak has no natural fuel that could be burned on the mountain peak and the soldier was never heard from again nor his body found! Since this summit could not be documented many believe that the first time this was climbed successfully was in 1940 when a team of climbers from Cape Town (led by Le Roux) reached the summit.

Spitzkoppe is the most famous mountain range in Namibia, attracting tourists from near and far - see these magnificent mountains and peaks on our Pure Namibia safari (camping or accommodated version!).
