NAMBIA SAFARIS AND DAMARALAND:

Damaraland is a huge region in Namibia that covers forests, open plains, mountains and desert areas. The name Damaraland refers to the north-central part of Namibia, once inhabited by the Herero people who were then referred to as the ‘Damaras’. Damaraland derived its name from the Nama language; ‘Damara’ meaning those ‘who walked here’ which describes the footprints that were often found near the waterholes in this area of Namibia.

Damaraland is surrounded by Windhoek, the Kalahari Desert, the Namib Desert and Ovamboland. Damaraland contains the most scenic areas in Namibia – making this area a safari must. You can see desert elephants, black rhinos, ostriches and springbok. Damaraland also contains four well known areas that are Namibian highlights and safari attractions, they are: Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Spitzkoppe and the Petrified Forest. Brandberg is well known for the ‘white lady’ , a bushman rock painting; Twyfelfontein is a rocky mountain area filled with historic paintings (1000 AD); Spitzkoppe is an unusual mountain peak (thought to be a broken apart volcano); and the Petrified Forest dates back to millions of years ago.

The Damaraland community is a group of people who all share a passion for the flora and fauna of this Namibian area. For many years they have worked hard to protect this region from poachers and general destruction. They formed a proactive community and turned the Damaraland area into a Wildlife Conservancy (with the help of other organizations). In 1998 the Damaraland Camp helped the community by having their land proclaimed as the Torra Conservancy – one of the most successful conservancies in Africa.

It is best to visit this area between May and December; the climate is generally cooler between May and September averaging at 26 ºC in the day and about 8 ºC in the evenings!
