East Africa is without a doubt one of the most magical areas in Africa so much so that we have opened our own Operational offices in Tanzania. We know that the biggest highlight when travelling to East Africa is to witness the annual migration – this occurs when the wildebeest migrate in the thousands through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara National Parks. The last calculated number was just over 1.5 million wildebeest!

Wildebeest Migration

Migration Update – February 2012

It is typical at this time of year for the calves to start dropping on the Southern Serengeti Plains, however, due to the weather conditions the majority of the herd has split up in different directions. A large part of the herd has headed straight for the Central Serengeti Plains whilst the vast migration stretched between – Nyarboro Hills and Rongai Hills. This means that we did not get to see them as one big migration moving through the plains and it can be surprisingly difficult to find them.  Some of the herd has already started dropping their calves and they typically do this in this area because once the rain comes they are close to Lake Ndutu where the new calves can graze on alkaline enriched grasses. This will give them the strength to begin the long journey up North. Seeing as the weather plays a huge aspect in these animals lives we await the rains that are inevitable before the herd will move on.
